My journey thus far has been an unexpected one; a series of unfortunate events for my surrounding communities, but surprisingly a pleasant one for myself.
The wildfire started about two weeks ago; it was quite a concern for everybody. High Level was being evacuated and people were coming in our community as evacuees. The first few days were quite hectic as many people registered at the Centre I volunteered at. We cooked meals and I mainly kept people company. Through this process, however, I have met so many amazingly kind residents of Beaver First Nation. I have bonded with elders, adults, and children.
Through my time volunteering, I have heard many stories about Residential school, and how they impacted individuals and their way of life post Residential school. I learned even more how prevalent intergenerational trauma is, as well as lateral violence as a result of it. However, one story that I recall really left an impact on me.
I’ve had many elders share their Residential school experiences and it was such an emotional and powerful thing. Throughout these stories, I never really understood the true horrors that came to be until I heard them. Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; lateral violence from intergenerational trauma. I was very emotional as I relate with the Khmer Rogue taking place in my country. People dying on streets, assimilated and forced into a uniform culture. I had people share their confusion, hurt, and anger. It was very powerful. One person in particular changed their trauma into something positive. They went to school, became a mental health and addictions counsellor, and vowed to turn their trauma into something positive for their children. I’ll never forget them: “Laughter is healing.”
All in all, I see resilience in the community I am in regardless of circumstance. Everyone has been so friendly and it has been so great in getting to know everyone. I was given the choice to go home upon news of the wildfire; however, I chose to stay because of the people. The bond that I want to get to know more about.
Until next time, keep dreaming my friends!
